1. Buying and Selling Webinars & CD from WALA
WALA is proud to announce the launch of our live webinar series and CD on buying and selling assisted living facilities. Selling an assisted living facility is unlike selling most other types of real estate. This fall, two webinar sessions will teach you everything you need to know about buying and selling assisted living facilities. You can log-on from your computer and phone without leaving the office. Each session is 60 minutes and will consist of a 50 minute on-line webinar hosted by Mike Collins followed by a 10 minute Q&A period. In addition, you can email anonymous questions to him at any time during the live presentation.
-- In the first session, Successful Assisted Living Facilities Sales - Five Things Sellers Need to Know, participants will learn:
- How to set the asking price
- How to prepare the facility for sale
- What to expect for a sale timeline
- Things to know about a buyer
- How to plan financially for life after the sale
Wednesday September 10, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Late fee if register after September 5.
-- The second session, Successful Assisted Living Facilities Sales - Five Things Buyers Need to Know, will feature valuable information on:
- How to find the right property
- How to finance an acquisition
- Steps to cover during due diligence
- How to make a smooth transition
- How to grow your company through acquisitions
Wednesday October 22, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
WALA Members $79; Non members $158
Late fee if register after October 15.
Note: If you register on The WALA store for both live Webinars at the same time, WALA will ship you the CD of both seminars by November 1 free of charge as an added bonus so you can review it at your leisure.
Based on Mike Collins' highly acclaimed 2001 course about buying and selling assisted living facilities, this educational two-part series features Collins' original curriculum with current revisions to meet the changing demands of the AL world. Mike is a real estate broker and CPA specializing in the AL market. He was a partner in a family business that developed 21 AL facilities during the 90's so he knows firsthand the problems you face.
To register for this event, simply visit The WALA Store and be sure to register by September 5 for Session One and October 15 for Session Two in order to avoid a late fee. NOTE: WALA will email you important information two days before each event. Be sure to read the log-in info before the live webinar so you are prepared at 10:00 am.
CD's will also be available if you are unable to attend the live webinar. CD's will include the entire presentation as presented live during the webinar, including PowerPoint, all handouts, and a certificate of attendance. CD's will be shipped after November 1 and will include both sessions. WALA Members $125; Non members $250

Let us share them with you. We bring a team of dynamic speakers: Becky Rogers from the Alzheimer's Association, and Mary Salzieder, the 2008 recipient of the Alzheimer's Association Wisconsin Chapter Network Outstanding Professional Award. We are taking this informative seminar to all five regions of the state to save you travel costs and time.

3. Division of Quality Assurance Complaint Resources (Memo 08-016)
Providers needing to get their own AL memos from DHS should sign up online using the DLTC, DMHSAS and DQA Memo Series E-mail Subscription Services.
The purpose of this memo is to introduce the new Division of Quality Assurance (DQA) online and toll-free, complaint-intake system.
DQA is responsible for assuring the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Wisconsin. If an individual believes that a caregiver, agency, or DQA-regulated facility has violated State or Federal laws pertaining to regulated entities, that individual has the right to file a complaint with DQA.
In the past, individuals with complaints were instructed to contact the appropriate regional office via telephone or postal mail. These systems are still valid and applicable methods to submit complaints. In addition, DQA has added options for individuals to report their concerns via Internet submission or use of a toll-free telephone number.
- Online Complaint Form
Any individual may file a complaint regarding a (staff) person, agency, or DQA regulated facility (including clinical labs) by supplying the information requested in this online form. - Toll-Free Complaint Phone Number
The phone number for submitting a complaint via the toll-free complaint line is 1-800-642-6552. Any individual may file a complaint regarding a (staff) person, agency, or DQA-regulated facility (including clinical labs) by following the menu instructions and leaving a message in the mailbox.
4. WALA's CBRF & AFH Administrator Course Returns to MCFI in October

Register online now.
5. Family Care to Exceed 50% Benchmark
The Department of Health Services has filed with the Wisconsin Legislature's Joint Finance Committee for approval of the expansion of the Family Care program into the Counties of Eau Claire, Marathon and Vernon. If approved, the Family Care program would exceed a significant benchmark - Family Care would cover more than 50% of the state in November 2008.
Counties and MCOs
- Eau Claire County: Community Health Partnership
- Marathon County: Community Care of Central Wisconsin
- Vernon County: Western Central Consortium for Long-Term Support and Health Care Reform
