Join us for a topical, timely and tantalizing look at some of the hottest topics to hit Assisted Living this year. We're calling it the "Healthcare Regional Workshop." And we're coming to you! This is an interesting information-packed day you won't want to miss.

REGULATORY UPDATE

Attorney Bob Lightfoot, RN with Murphy Desmond S.C. will address the HFS 83 changes, BQA trends and top cites, information collected from the Assisted Living Forum and much more.

MEDICATIONS & INSULIN ADMINISTRATION

The presentation will focus on highlights from BQA Pharmacy Consultant Doug Englebert's presentation at the WALA Conference. We will review the answers to common questions and concerns in assisted living medications - especially insulin administration.

NURSE DELEGATION

This session will discuss issues of nursing delegation in assisted living. As a nurse working in an assisted living facility, you put your license and your reputation on the line every day, but you aren't the only one who has an impact on that reputation. Delegation is a matter of survival in this busy business. Whether your license is in the hands of a great staff that knows their stuff, or a staff that is causing you to lose sleep, this session is designed to present you with ideas that will help you protect your license, your career and your future.

MENTAL ILLNESS: FACTS, INTERVENTIONS AND RESOURCES FOR ASSISTED LIVING PROVIDERS

Whether it's depression, anxiety, agitation, anger or hostility that changes the behavior of an older adult in an assisted living community, our staff has to manage it. This session is designed with the older adult in mind who has some history of mental illness, but mental illness was not the primary reason that assisted living was chosen as their home.

This session is designed to review signs and symptoms and to give some Do's and Don'ts in responding to and intervening. It will also outline what's normal behavior in older adults, and what may signify that someone is dealing with mental health concerns - whether they have been diagnosed or not.

Topics covered will include:
- Recognizing early signs and symptoms of a mental illness
- Recognizing the opportunity/need for early intervention and management
- When difficult behaviors should concern you
- Responding to depression, anxiety and grief as well as difficult personalities
- Behaviors that can indicate a need for emergency response

An integral portion of this program will be to work through the real-life case studies of challenging situations in assisted living settings. Through small and large group work we'll:
- Review cases
- Identify triggers and possible interventions
- Outline the appropriate staff direction
- Discuss follow through - immediate, 24 hours, etc.
- Identify community resources

This session is designed for a Manager or Nurse. It will provide helpful information to use for staff training, but more importantly, it will help you manage the Friday, 8:00 p.m. telephone call from staff that says, "We have a problem." If you've already learned that a 911 call isn't the answer for everyone and closing your eyes and hoping it will go away didn't work, this session is for you.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR OUR PRESENTERS?

E-mail them to us at info@ewala.org and we will give you the answer at your session!
