Like any other unplanned incident that could befall your community, incidents of caregiver misconduct, including abuse, neglect, and misappropriation leave no provider or resident immune. There are many factors that may lead to caregiver misconduct. Ensure that you are aware of the processes required to address allegations of caregiver misconduct while supporting your residents, including what needs to be reported to the Division of Quality Assurance (DQA) and what occurs after an allegation of misconduct is reported to DQA. This pre-conference intensive will lead you through the steps of identifying an allegation of misconduct and the actions needed to manage the situation before it manages you.

 

Attendees will learn:

  • Factors that may contribute to caregiver misconduct and steps to take when an allegation of caregiver misconduct is learned
  • Reporting requirements under DHS ch. 88, 83, 89 and investigation and reporting requirements under DHS ch. 13
  • Residents’ rights to due process and victims’ support
  • Investigation biases, examples of questions to ask as part of a facility investigation, and indicators of deception
  • What happens after an allegation of misconduct is reported to DQA
  • Role of Adult Protective Services and referrals to other agencies
  • Application of knowledge learned for case study work with fellow attendees
