Across the Progression of Dementia: How OUR Communication and Care Can Change

 Monday, September 14 | Tuesday, September 15th

11:00am-1:00pm

Dr Beth A. D. Nolan, PhD; Director of Research and Policy; Positive Approach to Care

This two-part session starts off our conference week with four quality hours in the assisted living learning laboratory with Dr Beth Nolan from Positive Approach to Care! This workshop is specifically designed for professional care giving and medical providers who work with people living with dementia to improve their hands on care for loved ones with dementia. Conditions of the brain are complex. This presentation will take an in-depth look at dementia through a strengths-based approach, describing both the neurological changes of the disease process, as well as retained skills and abilities. This educational session is highly interactive, teaching hands-on skill building for immediate use in clinical and non-clinical interaction and daily care provision.

Attendees will learn:

  • Foundational understanding of dementia through a strengths-based approach
  • An in-depth look into normal and abnormal brain changes associated with aging
  • De-coded common, problematic interactions and barriers to communication
  • Evidenced-based care partnering techniques
  • How the GEMS Model can be utilized to classify and communicate a state or stage of dementia
