Caregivers: The Definition of Important


Being a caregiver to a person who needs support can be the most rewarding job you could ever do. The relationships you have with your residents will stay with you forever and you could have a lasting impact for the person who you care for.


But what is a caregiver?


It has been basically defined in dictionaries as a person who cares for someone else in need of care - but what does a caregiver really do?


Here is a list of some of the duties a caregiver may have:

  • Initiating social interaction with peers - making sure the person is not isolated
  • Communicates with team members regarding the well being of the residents
  • Activities - games, crafts, cooking, traveling, budgeting, shopping, etc.
  • ADLs - bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming etc.
  • Prepare meals 
  • Promoting independence as much as possible
  • Give or monitor medication
  • Cleaning and maintaining a home like environment
  • Assist with mobility needs
  • Being a friend, some one to talk to, do fun activities with, etc.
  • Monitor the health and well being of the individual for any changes in condition
